About our J17 – Somme 102nd – June

On this tour we attend the Anzac Day dawn Service at the Australian Memorial to their missing in Villers Bretonneux.

On this five day tour we stay the first two nights at our preferred hotel in Ypres, the 4 star Ariane.

On the final 2 nights we stay at our preferred hotel in Cambrai, the 3 star Beatus.

We usually base ourselves at the 3 star hotel Beatus in Cambrai, France. As well as following the actions of relatives with the aid of trench maps and the unit war diaries our visits may include; Beaumont Hamel. Here we visit preserved trenches and follow the exploits of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment on the 1st of July, 1916. Of over 800 men who attacked in the second wave, only 69 answered roll call the following morning. Lochnagar Crater. This was one of several mines exploded by the British at 0728 hours on the 1st of July, 1916. Hawthorn Ridge Crater. This mine was exploded 10 minutes before the attack on the 1st of July at 0720 hours. Here we also visit the sunken Road where many of the Lancashires attacked from on the 1st of July. Villers Bretonneux. As well as the Australian Memorial to their Missing in France (nearly 11,000) we visit the Museum in the school in the town. This town was re-captured by mainly two Brigades of Australians on Anzac Day, 1918. Poziers and Mouquet Farm. These were attacked by 3 Australian Divisions. In 45 days during 19 attacks, some 23,000 became casualties. Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. Over 72,000 names are recorded on this, the largest British War Monument in the world, including 833 South Africans. At the visitor centre we gain an overview of the 1916 battle of the Somme.

The tour price is based on the sharing of twin rooms with private facilities. For a single room there is a supplement of £30.00 per night. This is a direct charge to us by the hotel and is beyond our control.
