About our Ypres Tours
Ypres (aka Ieper), is a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It is surrounded by Ypres Salient battlefields, where many cemeteries, memorials and war museums honour the German-Allied battles that unfolded in this area during World War I.
After the war, most of the town's important buildings were reconstructed meticulously, including Gothic-style Sint-Maartenskathedraal (St. Martin's Cathedral) and its soaring spire.

These 3 day tours are based in Ypres in Belgium and we usually stay at the 4 star Ariane hotel in the town. Now spelt Ieper, it was generally known to the British Tommy as "Wipers". Ieper is in the province of West Flanders and the language is Flemish. French and German are spoken in other parts of Belgium. This town witnessed 5 major battles in 1914, 1915, 1917 and 1918, and nearly a quarter of a million Commonwealth soldiers died defending this town.
All of our tours are individually tailored according to the requirements of our guests. As well as following movements of relatives with the aid of trench maps and unit war diaries we will generally include;
Tyne Cot British Cemetery. This is the largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the world where nearly 12,000 men are buried and nearly 35,000 of the British Missing are commemorated.
Passchendaele Museum. Here we experience life underground in a reconstructed bunker and visit preserved trenches.
Essex Farm. It was at the site where John McCrae, a Canadian Doctor, penned the immortal poem "In Flanders Fields".
Langemark Cemetery. Here we view the stark contrast between the German burials and those of the Commonwealth.
Messines Ridge. We explore the 1917 battle and visit some of the 19 mines which were exploded by the British.
Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing. Nearly 55,000 Commonwealth soldiers are commemorated here. We attend the moving Last Post ceremony on one evening.
