Menin Gate at Midnight
(Reference: BBJ101)

Size: 29.5" x 18" (75cm x 46cm)

William Longstaff painted "Menin Gate at Midnight" after he had attended the unveiling ceremony of the memorial in the Belgian town of Ypres in July, 1927. The scene is painted in hues of blue which help to suggest a midnight scene. The pale memorial is placed boldy on the horizon and before it marches a host of ghostly soldiers portrayed by an impressionist outline of figures and helmets. The foreground is strewn with blood-red poppies.

Ghosts of Vimy Ridge
(Reference: BBJ102)

Size: 27.5" x 19.5" (70cm x 50cm)

Will Longstaff painted this scene in 1931, before the monument was completed. The theme closely follows his other works and portrays the spirit of the Canadian Corps. Resembling the Menin Gate at Midnight in composition, the Vimy Ridge Memorial stands dramatically on the summit, beneath which the shimmering spirits of Canadian Soldiers gather in the silvery moonlight.

The original painting was displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, and the Canadian Government holds the copyright.

Carillon
(Reference: BBJ103)

Size: 27.5" x 19.5" (70cm x 50cm)

A scene depicting the spiritual images of soldiers gathering against the outline of a moonlit sky. The painting Carillon is said to show the ghosts of New Zealand soldiers on the beaches of Belgium listening to the carillon bells in their home country and was painted in 1932. The painting is permanently housed at Archives New Zealand, Wellington, New Zealand and is occasionally loaned for exhibition.

Immortal Shrine
(Reference: BBJ104)

Size: 29.5" x 18" (75cm x 46cm)

This painting depicts endless colums of ghostly soldiers marching past the Cenotaph on a rainy Remembrance Day in 1928. The Cenotaph itself has a surreal presence, gauntly white in front of the sombre blue-back buildings that dissolve into the backdrop. Like its famous predecessor, "Immortal Shrine" has undeniable power and is just as hypnotic and evocative.
The original paintings are displayed in Canberra, and the Australian War Memorial holds the copyrights.
